Infographic Thumbnails

My choice for the Infographic project was 'Over The Garden Wall'. Last week Alan wanted us to have some thumbnails ready for our next lesson, so here's mine:

Premise Development

After my tutorial with Alan I've decided on what direction I want to go forward with this project. I'm still going to incorporate hallucinations or some form of delusion. The character will have to try and go about their day while being the only one who can see the hallucinations. Alan suggested that the person could either be used to seeing the hallucinations but has to navigate past them or someone more anxious and doesn't quite know how deal with what they see. I like the idea of the character being tired and someone who is just trying to go about their daily business. I haven't established whether I want the character to be younger or older. In the sketch, I imagined them being someone who works in an office. However, Alan also suggested that it doesn't have to be and he gave the example of a uni student. Over the next week I want to do some thumbnails to get some ideas out there as well as building upon the research I have.

Thesis Mind-map

Last week we all took part in a activity where we tried to suggest useful topics for one another. My chosen topic was Animation and Gender.

Premise development and Additional ideas

This is some development on the idea of hallucinations, based on the feedback I received I researched the term more and looked into the things people hallucinate. The Oliver Sack TED talk was helpful in understanding the types of hallucinations and the science behind it. Also Anil Seth's TED talk was also helpful in terms of other possible directions I can take the story.

In terms of other ideas, I thought of an idea where there are two beings represented by fire and ice. Their arguing and things start to escalate but then it cuts to reveal two siblings fighting. I feel like this idea is a bit generic, but it was an idea that popped into my head when I thought about my brother recently. The idea for fire and ice came from the fact if me and my brother had the same thing one would have a red version and the other a blue version.

Thesis Proposal Ideas

These are my Thesis ideas:

1) Western v Eastern animation and how they represent gender (Animation + Gender)

-This was an idea that I touched upon in Year 1 for my first essay, however I feel like because I hadn't written an essay in a while at that point and also adjusting to university standards of academic writing I did not feel satisfied with the end result. This time I would like to go a completely different route. One of the issues I had with the first essay was trying to cram too much into such a short essay, but now I think with 8000 words I could flesh out the topic a lot more.

2) Internet Culture and its impact on society

- I wasn't too sure how to phrase this but this is how I put it. At the moment this feels like it may be a
bit too broad but hopefully this can be refined more on Monday.

3) Representation of illnesses and mental health in media, such as film, television and video games

- Again, I feel like this idea would also need some refinement.

@Alan @Phil - Premise ideas

In order from top to bottom these are the ideas that I would be most interested in doing:

1) A developed version of my idea from the previous post related to a story from a friend.

In order to develop this idea I need to include some emotion, during my tutorial yesterday Alan suggested that I look for a reason as to why the main character would want to escape from reality. I've asked some peers as well as looking into to some potential reasons such as a fear, boredom due to dissatisfaction, anxiety/other peoples anxieties and stress, bullies and parents.

2) Mechanical Magician

Building upon what I did for my character design project, I think there is a story that I could take forward with it. While I was working on my character bible I realised that there is an emotional story behind the character and it is definitely a potential idea.

3) Seal Story

During my time in halls I saw a seal along the pier. From this I noted down a basic idea about a person who falls into a river of some sorts and is saved by the seal. Alan said this could also use some emotion so he suggested the person who falls in could possible be depressed and this experience is meant to be an eye wakening moment.

I'm very keen to do the first idea and I'm hoping that I can refine it. However, if I can't go ahead with the first idea, I'm hoping the second idea will be good enough. I still need to come up with more ideas so that I have a wider range, but for now I will post these.

Premise Rough Idea

At the moment I have been struggling to come up with ideas. However I have one idea that I would really like to do based on a story that my friend told me. After a night out she arrived home and said she started hallucinating. she saw what she described as an "Alien" jumping around her room and doing cartwheels. I like the idea of this alien creature and thought that with some help I could develop this into an idea. I was interested in possibly starting off in the 'real' world and then the alien transports us to a new one.

(Alien creature, drawn by friend)

I wanted to use Joseph Pelling and Becky Sloan as influence for this idea. They have worked on projects such as; Tame Impala's ' Feels Like We Only Go Backwards' and 'Don't Hug me I'm Scared'.  Most of their works involve claymation especially the Tame Impala
 video.

(Example of Pelling and Sloan's work)

(Another example of their work)

Another influence I wanted use was from the GUM music video 'Blue Marble'. In the video you can see a strange world created from again using claymation. Examples of this are:

Hopefully, I can think of more ideas that I can fallback on. However, for now this is the main idea that I have.

Character Design - Second Concept Idea

Version 1

Version 2

This is the second idea I had for concept art, influenced by some Victorian posters of magicians. I have two versions because I wasn't sure about the placement of the words. I'm leaning towards the first version because it's easier to read, but if anyone has any opinions on which one please comment.
